Manifestation of an event

Terminology note

In the context of UML.

The notion of event includes that of a change in state, just like a traffic light that changes to green. The signal – conventional – lies in the green color displayed under certain conditions (on the roadside, light situated at the bottom of the traffic light, etc.). The meaning of this signal has nothing to do with this conventional group (the arbitrary nature of the sign): the signal refers back to a more complex event, linked to driving conditions, authorizing and prohibiting certain behaviors. The meaning lies in this event, itself involving a configuration of objects in certain states. The signal only manifests – makes manifest, symbolizes, expresses… – this event. Our designs closely mix the modeling elements of events, signals and states. The UML standard carefully dissociates and links these notions together.
