Operation

All the activities that make up the normal and regular running of the enterprise

Terminology note

Definition in business context.

Introduction to the notion

In the operations-transformation relationship, “operations” represents the pole of everyday activities, from the normal running of the enterprise, whereas “transformation” refers to activities that define or modify the operational activities.

Comment

The classic distinction between operations and transformation is useful for the how we think about things. However, the need for the enterprise to adapt to a changing context leads to the boundaries between these two notions becoming blurred, both in the organization and running of the enterprise. It is about making the enterprise agile, that is to say remaining vigilant, detecting transformation opportunities and requirements and carrying out any changes in as quick and cost-effective a manner as possible. These requirements bring us to the notion of the “transoperational” enterprise.
