Situation: uncontrolled duplication of the same slides in several PowerPoint presentations. Redundancy; one never knows which version is best; where the fullest notes are, where those reviewed are, etc.

  • isolate the slides, potentially even the images themselves, as occurrences of an idea;
  • the idea can have several occurrences, distinguished according to viewpoint or purpose of communication;
  • a slide is an assembly of texts (each of which could be considered as an idea), images and notes (also the sum of texts-ideas);
  • a presentation is an assembly of slides; it has a logical existence (links between these slides and a story, a purpose… as well as event information = the presentation is linked to one or more events in which it has been used);
  • this logical existence (the essence) precedes its physical occurrences (publication format; files);
  • the components of a presentation can, of course, appear in other material: other presentations, texts, sites, applications… (think about a standardized definition which must be refreshed in several places; figures which have to be updated).

Fab: Good point. It ties in with the principle that a presentation is only one of the purposes of communication of an assembly of ideas. The story told by a presentation existed before the presentation(s) and even exists without it/them. If we follow this to the end, we can create a story from ideas; a story which is itself, an idea (a sort of synopsis) and can be rendered in a document written in-extenso or in a slide presentation.
